Brew Ha Ha: what’s all of the fuss about beer?

A Bud by another name

Budweiser beer

I had this great idea for a blog, which was to do a side-by-side taste test of American Budweiser and Czech Budweiser (Budvar in Czech). For those who are interested in such things, the German name for the small Bohemian city of Budvar is Budweis, and therefore any beer which came out of Budweis would be a Budweiser beer. To many of the early brewers in the US, Budweiser was a term which evoked a sense of quality, an appellation of sorts, and at one point there were many Budweiser beers scattered across the US.

Unfortunately, someone beat me to it. That doesn’t mean I still won’t do it, although I may have to ask someone else to get the American Bud just to preserve my reputation as a beer snob.

I’ve had the European version quite a few times, seeing as I travelled to the Czech Republic while living in Munich. I’ve even been to the town of Budweis. I missed the brewery tour, though, which you’ll see is a bit of a theme for me. In any case, Budvar has to rank among my favorite beers of all time, although I’m certain some of that was contextual. Bitter legal squabbles had kept the beer off the US market for many years, but Budvar is now imported under the clumsy moniker “Czechvar,” thanks to a recent agreement with Anheuser-Busch to distribute it in the US. I have yet to see how Czechvar compares with the original, or at least my long-dormant remembrance of the original.

So watch this space - I know which one is going to win, but it’ll be fun anyway.
