True or False:

After repealing Prohibition, President Franklin Roosevelt said:

I believe this would be a good time for a beer.

The answer after the jump…

True!

After 13 years, 10 months, 19 days, 17 hours and 33-1/2 minutes (not that anyone was counting), Prohibition officially ended on December 5, 1933. Roosevelt had taken office a few months earlier.

The 18th Amendment, the National Prohibition Act, was certified as ratified on January 29, 1919, and was effective on January 29, 1920. The amendment made the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol illegal in the US, though making limited amounts of wine and cider from fruit at home was allowed - but no home brewed beer.

Thankfully, on December 5, 1933, the 18th Amendment was officially repealed.
