Beergarden, if only for a day
According to historical photos, Philadelphia once had a host of traditional beergardens to service its large German population. Prohibition and the flight of much of that population to the suburbs has largely eliminated that beergarden culture, but once a year one of the city’s largest German clubs opens its beergarden to the rest of us. It’s pretty much as close to the real thing as you’ll find within city limits.
So, if you have a little extra time this Labor Day weekend, celebrate in the shade of a chestnut tree with a good German beer in hand at the Cannstatter Volksfest. Close you’re eyes and you’ll (almost) forget you’re in the greater Northeast.
