Ding Dong the Witch is dead

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, Tröegs Brewery in Harrisburg PA is teaming up with the local historical society to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition.
For those who aren’t aware of it, the US had as vibrant and thriving a brewing industry as any country before Prohibition killed off all but a handful of brewers who managed to muddle their way through making soft drinks and near beer. Prohibition’s legacy remains in a series of convoluted laws intended to stop the practice of running “tied houses,” or brewery-operated or franchised bars, and in significantly higher taxes. Finally, American tastes were changed forever as the returning brewers focused on the lighter American Lager style of beer, rather than the mix of porters, ales, and other beer styles which existed pre-Prohibition.
The celebration takes place this Friday, April 11, and will feature a firkin of Tröegs Scratch Bitter and an aged barley wine. In addition, Philly beer writer Lew Bryson will be there as well, to tap the keg (and promote his book, of which I’m more than a bit envious).
