Brew Ha Ha: making a fuss about beer

Gifts which taste great

by Chris on December 4th, 2007

Chimay beer cheese

There are lots of gift ideas for beer drinkers, but one thing you might not have thought of is food. There are two types of food of interest to the average beer drinker, food made with beer and food which goes well with beer. Here are a few ideas for you.

Pretzels are great with beer, and the best hard pretzels are made in my home state of Pennsylvania. My favorite are the relatively unknown Martin’s, although my father has cast his lot with Uncle Henry’s, also good. What goes great with pretzels? Mustard, and if you’re looking for a beer-inspired mustard you can try this Guinness-based mustard from a previous post. I must confess to enjoying the locally available Mr. Mustard brand, but I’m not sure how readily available it is to those of you without Acme grocery stores.

This excellent (if old) post from Real Beer suggested Trappist cheeses as a gift idea, a suggestion which is excellent as long as the individual you are buying for enjoys stinky cheeses - in my experience, really stinky cheeses. I enjoyed the Chimay cheese I had a while back, but it may well be an acquired taste. Less esoteric is Cahill’s Cheddar with Guinness, although it’s not nearly as distinctive a cheese.

Apparently Beer Nuts is actually a brand, not a kind of nut, but it’s obviously a snack well suited to the beer drinker. I’ve grown to like Aunt Ruby’s, from North Carolina, although my wife swears by her hometown peanut people at Carolina Peanuts.

Now I’m hungry, so I’ll leave you with that.
