Hopfen und Malz
Back when this blog was elsewhere I introduced a special feature called “Hopfen und Malz,” a feature in which a priest friend of mine provided insight into the interplay between religion and beer. As most beer lovers know, brewing and religion have been intertwined throughout history, particularly with respect to monastic life, and it’s difficult to discuss one without mentioning the other. While I’m not overly religious, I think religion is an important and interesting aspect of beer and brewing, and certainly quite blog-worthy, so we’ll continue that tradition here.
That, and the good reverend has a different (albeit largely compatible) taste in beer, so it’s nice to have another opinion around here.
The name derives from a Bavarian saying, “Hopfen und Malz, Gott erhalt’s,” which I’ve loosely translated as “Hops and Malt, God preserve them.” I can only echo that sentiment.
