Brew Ha Ha: making a fuss about beer

Oktoberfest for kids

by Chris on September 25th, 2007

Most people don’t think of the Oktoberfest as an event for children, but ultimately it’s a fair, and no one likes rides more than children (or drunk adults). That and, as I’ve written elsewhere, Germans, or at least Bavarians, don’t think of beergardens and beer halls as places to visit independent of their children. Instead, the beergardens and beer halls are intended for young and old, singles and families, and everything in between.

So perhaps it should surprise no one that the Oktoberfest even has two “family days,” with reduced prices on rides and food. The beer remains full price, I’m guessing.

This year the family days are on Tuesdays, September 25 and October 2, 2007. So go ahead, bring the kids!

Both my husband and I would love to go to Germany for an Oktoberfest — good to know it’d actually be kid-friendly if we did!

On that note, just caught your launch announcement and wanted to say welcome to the madhouse! :D

Welcome to the Home & Dining channel and b5 (unless you have some blog here I’m unaware of) in that case still, welcome to H&D. I drink about one beer a year but I’ll still visit :)

It is worth noting that the author is attending Oktoberfest without his family (ahem)…

    Thanks for the welcomes!

As for the kid-friendly part, I’ll confirm it while I’m there and report back. Last time I went, I didn’t have kids, so I couldn’t really judge. One thing is for sure - if I were bringing mine I’d start early, end early, and bring a lot of dollars if the exchange rate keeps going the way it is.

I am a Canadian living in Germany and was shocked, at first, by the playground corner for kids in most beer gardens. It was second in strength only to the shock of realising that 0.20 liters of pop is almost the same price as half a liter of beer.

Yes, I actually wasn’t a beer drinker when I went to Munich the first time, but I switched to a Radler (beer with lemon soda) pretty quickly after my seventh über-expensive Coke. It was only a short trip to Munich Helles from there.
