Ten things I think I think
With apologies to ESPN, it’s time for ten things I think I think about the Oktoberfest. It’s been fifteen years or so since I had been to the Oktoberfest, and 20 years since James spent almost a week of afternoons there, and there’s a lot to say. For now, a few thoughts:
1. The Oktoberfest is still fun, whether old or young, male or female.
2. Augustiner remains my favorite Munich beer, hands down
3. Three hours at a table at the Oktoberfest is a truly multicultural event, with Americans, Italians, Turks, Germans, Bavarians (there being a distinction), etc. cycling through our one table.
4. Dirndls (the Bavarian traditional dresses) were clearly designed by men for men, or perhaps by women for men, but in any case for men
5. Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s the Oktoberfest, but sometimes it isn’t all that difficult to pick up where you left off 20 years earlier. The “reunion” was a great success.
6. Lawyers are ruining Germany as well, no doubt with the help of willing plaintiffs, more on that later.
7. A liter of beer doesn’t seem like as much as it is when everyone’s drinking one.
8. It’s hard to take notes for a blog while crammed in between drunk Germans.
9. The Oktoberfest is not for the claustrophobic, which means getting my wife to go with me will be a challenge.
10. The beer at the Oktoberfest doesn’t remotely resemble the Märzen sold as Oktoberfest beer in the US.
As you can probably tell, the Oktoberfest afternoon was a success, and there’s more to write than I’ll remember. That said, I’ll do my level best to tell you all about it!
